About Us

David and Nancy Hanson moved to the San Juan Islands looking for a more relaxed lifestyle than the hustle and bustle of Seattle. Seeing a need for a toy store in Friday Harbor, they opened their first store next to the ferry landing in Cannery Landing.

Looking for a name for the store, they thought of a favorite evening activity. As a way to unwind after a busy day, they would play with a collection of wind-up toys that they kept in a box they called "David's Toy Box." The Toy Box was born and soon became a local favorite for kids of all ages. It was a popular stop for local parents taking a walk downtown with their kids, as well as for the hundreds of thousands of island visitors.

It soon outgrew its original space so Nancy and David decided to relocate to their present location on First Street. With this larger location, they were able to expand their store to supply the island with more unique and varied types of toys.
