Unique to North America, bald eagles are the second-largest raptor on the continent, after the California condor. They are very common in Alaska, but eagles now range throughout Canada and the United States, as far south as Florida and Baja, California.

  • History: The bald eagle became the national symbol of the United States in 1782, just six years after independence. There were tens of thousands of the majestic raptor at the time, ranging throughout the continental U.S., but for a variety of reasons, their population plummeted to a low of 417 pairs by 1963. Massive conservation efforts undertaken to protect the gorgeous birds, including laws passed to ban DDT, restrict lead, and limit certain pesticides thought harmful to eagles helped bald eagle populations recover to the point where they were downgraded from endangered to threatened.
  • Scientific Name: Haliaeetus leucocephalus
  • Characteristics: The symbol of the United States, these bald eagle figures can nest in Fourth of July treats or be part of US history projects. They also make great patriotic gifts.
  • Size: These Bald Eagle mini figures are about the size of a mini candy bar, about an inch in length.
